The spectacular country of Tanzania
Tanzania has many national parks and game reserves for viewing wildlife, the most famous being the Serengeti National Park. Visitors from all over the world come to see the annual wildebeest migration through the Serengeti and the Masai Mara. Serengeti is flat which makes game viewing relatively easy.
The Ngorongoro Conservation Area houses the Ngorongoro Crater. Here you can see a wide variety of game, including lions, elephants, rhinos, buffalos, zebra and reedbuck, also thousands of flamingo. In this area are massive fig trees. They are sacred, because they stand on graves of leaders who died in battle
Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa, reaching 5,895 meters. It has a unique biodiversity of plants and animals.
In Africa there are a quite a few countries where you can see the ’Big Five’, but Tanzania is the most spectacular, because of the big populations of each of the big five.
Lion
The big cats can weigh up to 250 kg and are of the most feared animals in the bush. Male lions have mane. Hunting are not being done by them, but by the females who hunt in packs.
Elephant
The Elephant is the largest land mammal and can weigh up to 11,000 kg They live on plants such as fruit, bark and leaves.
Cape Buffalo
They live in herds and eat grass. The Cape Buffalo can weigh up to 700 kg. They can be dangerous when alone without a herd. They have bad vision, but very good hearing.
Rhino
The Rhino population dropped rapidly over the last 20 years and are in danger of becoming extinct. They can weigh op to 1,400 kg and live on leafy plants, fruits, roots and branches.
Leopard
The leopard has spots, hunts at night and sleeps during the day. They store their kill in trees to avoid scavengers from taking their prey.
